What I’m Reading Now: Creating a Learning Society - Dr. Kimberly Engber

I am reading Stiglitz and Greenwald Creating a Learning Society because we are part of a university moving by leaps and bounds toward a new innovation campus.  Although Stiglitz and Greenwald are economists, I’m not reading them to learn economic theory.   I want to know where I fit into the new university, and I want some context for thinking about how an Honors education fits into this new push for innovation.  Stiglitz and Greenwald argue that the market economy efficiently produces goods but does not produce and transmit knowledge efficiently.   And, entrepreneurship depends on the efficient production and transmission of knowledge.

From where I sit—with the sun finally streaming into the windows of Shocker Hall after long days of cold and clouds, warming the purple succulent that graces my windowsill—innovation is simply learning by another name.   Good entrepreneurs have the ability to learn and adapt, and they gain that ability, as Henry David Thoreau did in the nineteenth century, by developing a keen awareness of their world, themselves, and the people around them, by reading the signs in books and in beans, by sometimes following a line of thought away from social expectations.  So where does Honors education fit?  It facilitates and critiques innovation, as the university always has; it turns toward light, toward producing knowledge that will move us all together.

Remember to let us know how you are moving the world by reporting your engagement hours to honorsugfellow@wichita.edu.

Title: Reducing Medication Administration Errors in Emergency Medical Services through the Implementation of a Verbal Verification Method

Healthcare reform is a reoccurring issue that is common to legislatures across the country. Policy changes to healthcare affect everyone and in order to better provide for the citizens of the State agreements must be made on the type of reform that is needed. Reforming healthcare in the United States includes improving the access and quality of care provided to citizens. In order to improve the quality of care, medication errors need to be minimized in the healthcare field. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) professionals evaluate over 36 million people a year with over 16 million of these people transported to hospitals for additional care. Thousands of these people are prone to preventable medication administration errors made by providers. One of the many causes of these errors is in the way EMS professionals verify the drugs they are administering. The current verification method in place, is known as the 5 Rights method, has been questioned since no empirical data exists to support it. The 5 Rights method is a mental verification susceptible to fallibility of human processing. Currently we are studying the effects of a new Medication Administration Cross-Check (MACC) on the frequency of medication administration errors. We hypothesize that the introduction of the MACC will significantly reduce medication administration errors compared to prior MACC implementation. By implementing MACC, the quality of the administration of healthcare in Kansas can be greatly improved.

Undergraduate Research: Colton Turner

The Honors Office works along side the Undergraduate Research Grants Program Assistant to provide opportunities and funds to Wichita State's undergraduate researchers. For the next few weeks, The Innovator will feature the current projects of Shocker researchers. If you have questions about undergraduate research, please contact Stephanie Rogers at 316-978-6378.

Last month, the students had the opportunity to present their research to legislators, lobbyists, and the Kansas Board of Regents at the Day at the Capitol event hosted this year by Wichita State. The Sunflower covered the event and took pictures which are included below.

Title: Pedestrian Detection During Night Time Driving and Texting

There is very little research on how distracted driving effects driving performance at night time. There is even less research on how distracted driving effects a driver’s ability to detect roadside pedestrians. This study aimed to find how night time driving and texting effects a drivers ability to detect roadside pedestrians, as well as determine what types of clothing may make pedestrians more visible under night time conditions. The strength of this study lies in its real world setting. Participants were passengers in an automobile driven by a researcher on a closed road course and were asked to monitor the driving scene for pedestrians both while texting and when not distracted.
