Student Spotlight: Hannah Hund

Hannah Hund is a Junior at Wichita State University pursuing biomedical engineering (BME) and violin performance with minors in biology and chemistry.  Hund started in mechanical engineering but switched to BME because she wanted to work directly with people.  She was excited about the current trend of innovation in the biomedical industry and the innovation opportunities offered at WSU.  Hund is a Wallace Scholar, WSU Undergraduate Research Grant recipient, and BEETS Summer Research Grant recipient. She is currently working on two team projects.
As a BME student, Hund traveled to Washington University in St. Louis for Demo Day with Dr. Brooking and another WSU student. Demo Day was a student pitch and presentation competition focused on health issues and their marketable solutions. Hund attended this event to see how other universities are cultivating idea incubators. The WSU team was invited to compete in next year’s event.

Hund is also working to create an on campus organization to attract students interested in entrepreneurship and innovation. Shocker Startup aims to promote interaction between students from different colleges and provide the tools necessary to turn their combined ideas into viable businesses.
Hund is involved in several organizations on campus, participating as a violinist in Suprima Chamber Orchestra and WSU Symphony Orchestra. She is student representative in WSU’s chapter of Biomedical Engineering Society. Hund was involved in the summer BME camp and taught high school students about biodesign and entrepreneurship. Off campus, Hund is a member of University Congregational Church choir and enjoys Vietnamese cuisine.
Hund says “I am a student of the Dorothy and Bill Cohen Honors College at Wichita State because I am inspired by their emphasis on interdisciplinary learning. Also, there are cookies and free printing. “ She has some advice for student researchers. “It is important to manage your time as a student researcher. Set weekly goals and hold yourself to them. You can be overwhelmed by everything you have to do to accomplish your end result, so divide it up into manageable tasks and get them done! If you must procrastinate, procrastinate by doing literature reviews. At least you’ll learn something!”
Hund hopes to graduate in the Fall of 2017 and would like to pursue an MD/PhD program in biomedical engineering.
