An Introduction to WHEAT by Brianna Long

Greetings Honors College students!

WHEAT (Wichita State honors events and activities team) is an organization for Honors College students who come together for community service, academic, and social activities. Members meet once a month for a general meeting after the Honors College monthly meeting. We learn what is happening with WHEAT, have different activities, and socialize with other Honors students.  There are also subcommittees, social, academic, and community service, which plan different events for the Honors College, as well as for WHEAT.

If you are interested in joining WHEAT our first informational meeting will be Wednesday, February 11, at 6 pm in the Shocker Hall Seminar Room, or you can come by the Honors College office and fill out a membership form.  If you have any questions or would like more information, please email Brianna Long at bdlong2@wichita.edu .  I hope to see everyone at our first meeting!  Also be sure to like us on Facebook!

Thanks!

Brianna Long

Undergraduate Research Grants - Stephanie Rogers

As Nora Zeale Hurston, author of Their Eyes Were Watching God, explains, “Research is formalized curiosity. It is poking and prying with a purpose.” Wichita State and the Honors College are dedicated to helping you develop personally and professionally while you pursue an undergraduate research project.
Full-time sophomores, juniors and seniors with a 2.5 GPA are eligible to receive up to $1000 in direct support of research or creative activities. Applications are accepted from Sept. 1 through Mar. 15 and are reviewed continuously. Honors students who strive to be lifelong learners are prime candidates to consider this opportunity. Not only will you be contributing professionally to the field of your choosing before you graduate, you will develop new interests and experiences around the project.
As a previous undergraduate researcher working in the field of communication sciences and disorders, I know that my dedication to pursuing a career helping children with hearing loss would not have developed if I hadn’t seen the raw data associated with our project. Through this year-long experience, I became passionate about helping children succeed in school, and this passion is driving me to choose graduate schools that emphasize pediatric audiology.
Those in the creative fields can partake of this grant funding as well. Spencer Sinclair, a student in the School of Art and Design, won a research grant in Spring 2014. “It's the university's job to give a student the credits,” he said, “but it's up to the students to decide their own future. Not only will this grant aid in the production of a body of work, but documenting the process, preparing for a presentation and solo exhibition, and communicating with people inside of the department and outside are the experiences that will be huge tools and vital to the success of the individual.”
If you have questions, email me at undergraduateresearch@wichita.edu or visit wichita.edu/ugresearch for more information.

Eligibility requirements:
1. Sophomore, junior, or senior
2. At least 2 semesters left at WSU (including the one in which you are applying)
3. 2.5 GPA
4. Full-time
5. Declared major
6. Faculty mentor support
7. Can only receive funds from program once

Braced Souls - Garrett Viets

Let's we two go,
Together alone,
Where only pairs
Have ever flown.

Where droplets form
And rainbows fall,
Where heaven glimmers
Against the wall.

Let's we two go
Where only pairs
Can find the wonders
Lying there.

Throughout the trees,
The winds, the snow,
While old men fail
And young men grow.

Let's go, we two
Down below the sound
And discover ourselves
While the skies caress the ground.

Let's we two go, then,
You and I,
Above ourselves,
Where stars don't block the sky.

Community Service: A Call To the LLC - Dr. Kimberly Engber

A very happy new year to you! I am already looking ahead to the spring semester, and my focus for spring is on community engagement. I challenge each member of the living learning community in particular to serve a campus, civic, intellectual, or creative community in any way you choose, to log your hours or projects and report them to Honors. For sustained service, you will earn a certificate from the dean and a college mug at the end of the semester. Let’s work together to make the worlds we want to live in. And let’s start now!

To start this service semester, I’ll be joining the WSU School of Social Work for the city wide Martin Luther King, Jr. parade and day of service on Saturday, January 17th meeting at 9:30am in the parking lot of The Christian Faith Center 1130 S. Broadway.

For more information: https://www.facebook.com/events/711762232201528/

If you’d like to participate with me as part of an Honors group, please email me by 5pm Thursday the 15th and look for an email on Friday the 16th about a more specific place to meet. Stay warm!
